Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are an integral part of the work we do in creating futures free of violence and we are so grateful for those who take the time to volunteer with us. Whether you work directly with the people we serve or help with other office duties, you can make a difference. To find out about volunteer qualifications, selection process, and available training, contact VIBS at (631) 360-3730.

RCCs are on-call to respond to any Suffolk County hospital to meet with survivors of rape/sexual assault, and are trained by VIBS and certified by the NYS Department of Health (DOH). Training includes 30-hours of pre-service training and at least 10 hours of in-service training during the first year in the program, before you can assist survivors. Training sessions are eight (8) consecutive weeks, and are held at VIBS, located in Islandia NY. Attendance is mandatory. In addition there will be approximately six (6) hours of reading and homework assignments. The DOH requires an additional 10-hours of training during the first year of service.  Note: there is a $40 fee for the purchase of the NYS Rape Crisis Manual. Program requirements:

    • Participation for a minimum of one year
    • Commitment to cover at least two (2) 12-hour shifts per month (6 a.m. – 6 p.m. OR 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.)
    • Attend a minimum of five (5) case review and training meetings within the first 12 months (minimum of ten hours)

Volunteers assist with events and help with other special projects and activities to raise awareness and increase funds for the organization. Heather Parrott, our new Director of Development and Education, would love help with organizing special events for the agency!

Volunteers are needed to dispatch our rape crisis counselors when there is a victim at one of our SAFE Centers or in an emergency department. The hours for this position are Monday through Thursday 9 p.m. – 9 a.m., weekends and holidays or events that the Agency closes for during that two week time period. You will receive a call on your cell and/or home phone and then dispatch the RCC that is on-call. Your commitment would be to cover a two-week rotation schedule, once every other month.

Volunteers will assist the Community Education & Outreach department by tabling at events throughout Suffolk County, including but not limited to community meetings, libraries, schools and health/wellness fairs. Candidates will be trained on our services/programs and serve as Ambassadors for VIBS.

Volunteers model healthy relationships and safe boundaries with children, while the parent/guardian is participating in counseling.
