Established in 1976, Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS) has been a pioneer in the domestic violence and rape crisis movements.
Our mission is to create futures free of violence through advocacy, counseling and education for survivors of intimate partner abuse, sexual violence, child abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking and veterans with PTSD and/or MST (military sexual trauma).
Because we envision a community free of all forms of abuse, we advocate for societal changes that will eliminate or decrease domestic and sexual violence.
PEOPLE WHO CARE:
Volunteers are the backbone of the agency, providing leadership on the Board of Directors; support and networking on the Resource Council; and direct services as Rape Crisis Counselors, Speakers Bureau, and child care volunteers. Volunteers play a vital role in the work we do.
A caring and knowledgeable staff of over 30 individuals provide hotline intervention, counseling, advocacy, legal assistance, court accompaniment, outreach and community education. VIBS’ employees have distinguished themselves in service, public advocacy and leadership and have received numerous awards and honors for their work.
In 2016, VIBS became an affiliate of IGHL. IGHL is recognized as a leader in providing services for people with developmental disabilities. They operate close to 40 homes, multiple day programs and many other supportive programs. This affiliation has forged a new road for the future, using expertise of both agencies to help more victims of violence in the future.
DECADES OF CHANGE:
In 1974, when VIBS was just an idea, no one imagined that there was so much abuse in suburban Long Island. In 1976 VIBS held a press conference to announce the grand opening of the center, few people understood the scope and complexity of intimate violence. Since 1976, VIBS has touched the lives of thousands of people. Victims of abuse were calling the hotline in droves. Compelled by mission and guided by experience, VIBS has pioneered innovative and effective programs to address domestic violence and sexual assault.
