The 22 Mile PTSD Awareness Challenge is a fundraiser to help reduce the number of veteran suicides by providing counseling and support. On August 29th, 22 kayaks will cover 22 miles across Long Island Sound from Bridgeport, CT to Port Jefferson, NY to raise money to start a veterans counseling program at VIBS.
Currently, 22 veterans die by suicide every day in the United States. The goal of this program is to reduce the number of veteran suicides by providing counseling and necessary services through VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center.
VIBS counselors are trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which helps to lessen the symptoms of PTSD. TFCBT provides mechanisms to manage anxiety and works on relaxation and visualization along with coping skills.
VIBS counselors are certified in Creative Art Therapy which focuses on expression through art and drama. VIBS is the only domestic violence agency in Suffolk County to provide creative arts therapy.
