Sexual assault is an umbrella term that refers to any unwanted intimate or sexual contact. Often, people associate sexual assault with rape, however rape is only one of the several forms of sexual assault. Other forms of sexual assault include: unwanted touching/fondling, attempted rape, forcing a victim to perform certain sexual acts or favors.
Like all abuse, sexual assault can happen to anyone and can be perpetrated by anyone. Approximately 1 in 6 women have reported being victim to an attempted or completed rape and 1 in 33 men report similarly. In child assault cases, 1 in 4 girls are victims prior to their 18th birthday as are 1 in 6 boys. The vast majority of sexaul assaults (7 out of 10) are carried out by individuals whom the victim knows. The sad reality is that sexual assault is happening around us and often goes unreported out of fear or shame and embarrassment.
VIBS has services to help:
VIBS’ SAFE Program features SAFE Centers that offer forensic examinations and initial medical services to victims of recent sexaul assault and may provide invaluable evidence collection for use in a victim’s pursuit of justice should they decide to move forward with a criminal case. VIBS provides Crisis Counselors who accompany victims to the SAFE Centers and stay by their side for the duration of the process. Our medical professionals receive intensive training to provide victims with the best service possible.
Following a SAFE Center visit, a SAFE Advocate will outreach the client to offer new information and provide the victim with available services:
- Assistance with victim compensation applications
- Court, law enforcement or prosecution interview accompaniment
- For medical treatment
- For VIBS Counseling
- For legal representation through the Domestic Violence Law Project (DVLP)
To request the assistance of a SAFE Advocate, call (631) 360-3606.
VIBS’ counselors are specially trained to provide therapy to victims to foster recovery following a sexual assault. Through various forms of modern therapy, VIBS counselors encourage clients to reclaim control of their lives and maintain their health and safety.
The Domestic Violence Law Project (DVLP) at VIBS provides legal representation to VIBS clients in need. The SAFE Advocate or a VIBS counselor can refer a client’s case to VIBS’ staff attorney’s should the client have specific needs within the court system.
