If a child has been abused call 911, they will direct you if you need to call CPS at 1-800 342-3720 and/or direct you to a SANE Center.
Child/Youth sexual abuse is defined as any sexual contact between an adult and child. It might also mean sexual activity between an older and a younger child. Abusers may use physical force, threats or trick children with bribes and treats. The abuser is most often someone a child knows and trusts — a babysitter, older child, teacher, family friend, parent/stepparent.
It is estimated that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 7 boys are sexually abused by the time they turn 18.
The effects of sexual abuse can be traumatic and long lasting. With proper support, children can heal and grow in healthy ways. The Children’s Program at VIBS provides counseling to children beginning at age 3. Counseling consists of:
- Counseling for sexual abuse, incest and rape victims
- Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Creative Arts Therapy
- Drama Therapy
- Play Therapy
- Parent/Guardian counseling to provide psycho-education on the effects of trauma and what they can do to support their children
Through play, art, or drama therapy, the child and therapist interact, using toys, games, stories and other creative materials. The goal is to reinforce safety, reduce PTSD symptoms, enhance coping skills, process traumatic events, and provide psychoeducation on healthy relationships for the future.
